Bike vs Car Servicing: What's Different?

Many Chennai households own both a car and a motorcycle or scooter. While both machines serve to get you from point A to point B, their engineering, fluid dynamics, and service requirements are vastly different. Understanding these differences helps you plan maintenance budget and intervals properly.

1. Service Intervals and Frequency

Bikes require much more frequent servicing than cars. A standard motorcycle or scooter engine runs at higher RPMs (revolutions per minute) and holds less engine oil (usually 0.8L to 1.2L). Therefore, bike oil degrades quickly, requiring service every 2,500 to 5,000 km. In contrast, cars hold 3.5L to 5L of oil and run at lower RPMs, extending their service intervals to 10,000 km or 6-12 months.

2. Engine and Transmission Fluids

In most cars, the engine oil and transmission fluid (gear oil) are kept in separate systems. In most motorcycles, however, the engine, transmission, and clutch are all housed in one unit and share the exact same oil. This wet-clutch system requires specialized motorcycle oil (JASO MA/MA2 specs) to prevent the clutch from slipping.

3. Chain Maintenance vs Alignment

Bikes require chain lubrication and tension adjustment every 500-1,000 km to prevent snaps and wear. Cars do not have exposed chains but require regular 3D wheel alignment and balancing every 10,000 km to ensure tyre longevity.
